Project GRAD, Communities In Schools, HISD Teachers and Volunteers
Go Door-to-Door to Visit Students & Parents at Home in a Walk For Success

Who:
Project GRAD Houston, Communities In Schools, HISD teachers and volunteers will visit more than 7,000 homes of students who attend 40 elementary, 8 middle and 5 high schools in inner-city Houston.

What:
Project GRAD’s Walk for Success is a door-to-door campaign

  • A home visit to more than 7,000 homes in inner-city HISD schools
  • A visit where teachers, principals, and volunteers talk directly to parents and/or guardians about their child’s plans for the future
  • A future that includes both high school and college diplomas!
  • Families sign a contract to qualify for a $4,000 tuition scholarship for students who receive at least a 2.5 GPA, graduate in four years from a Project GRAD high school, and meet school specific criteria
  • This is the 16th annual Walk for Success—the largest parent outreach endeavor within the Houston schools

Where:
Walk for Success happens in Houston inner-city neighborhoods that feed into:

  • Jefferson Davis High School
  • Jack Yates High School
  • Phillis Wheatley High School
  • John Reagan High School
  • Sam Houston High School

When:
Walk for Success takes place on Saturday, October 9, 2004
8:00 am – Noon

Notes:
Project GRAD Houston is a ten-year Pre-K through 16 school reform success story that began in 1988 with a scholarship program designed to help economically challenged students graduate from high school and go to college. Now over 2000 students are receiving Project GRAD scholarships and over 48,000 students benefit from the reform initiative.
