The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston will showcase the talent of students, past, and present from Jack Yates High School at “Eye on the Third Ward: The Tenth Anniversary,” opening February 12. In celebration of the 10th year of the exhibition, a special selection of 38 photographs will be on view in the Caroline Weiss Law Building, 1001 Bissonnet Street.

The exhibition features 20-photographs taken by current students in the established photography program at Yates and 18 photographs selected from previous “Eye on the Third Ward” exhibitions. The exhibition will remain on view through May 30.

The “Eye on the Third Ward” exhibition began in 1995 as a collaboration between the MFAH and Jack Yates High School – Magnet School of Communications. About 60 high school sophomores, juniors and seniors, ages 15-17, participate in the project each year.

The photographs are the product of a yearlong project, under the guidance of photography teacher Ray Carrington III, which encourages students to document Houston’s historic Third Ward through photography. The poignant images the students perpetually turn out are a testament to the skill of Carrington as both a teacher and a source of inspiration, HISD officials said.

Creative writings by the students accompany many of the photographs and reveal how the students discovered themselves in the process of discovering the community. For more information, call the MFAH at 713-639-7550.
