Project Grad Houston Awards Over $2 million in Scholarships to Local Students

Inner-City Project GRAD Students Each Receive $4,000 for College

(Houston, TX) – This year, Project GRAD Houston (Project GRAD) will award more than 500 scholarships to deserving students who have met the program-prescribed academic requirements. To receive a $4,000 Project GRAD Scholarship, students must attend an HISD high school that partners with Project GRAD, maintain a 2.5 GPA, attend two Project GRAD College Institutes, and graduate within four years. Scholarships are made possible by corporate and private donors who believe in the mission of the organization. “This year, Project GRAD has seen a healthy 14% increase in the number of students qualified for the scholarship. We hope to keep this number growing next year,” said Roy Hughes, Executive Director of Project GRAD Houston.

High school campus Scholarship Coordinators are in place to provide motivation and help the students maintain the required GPA in their college preparatory curriculum. Once enrolled in a college, university, or accredited degree-conferring institution, students must remain in good academic standing, take a minimum of twelve hours per semester, and complete the requirements stipulated in the scholarship agreement. The Scholarship Coordinator works with the scholars to help make the transition to college smooth and assists students in finding additional sources of financial assistance. Each year, Project GRAD scholars are invited back to engage in activities such as annual College Day in January to share college experiences or serve as a Project GRAD tutor.

Project GRAD Houston (Graduation Really Achieves Dreams) is a non-profit pre-K through 16 education reform model that provides additional resources to school districts -- teachers, students and families. Today, Project GRAD partners with 71 HISD schools with over 48,000 participating students. The Project GRAD model, developed in Houston over 10 years ago, now has over 150,000 participating students within twelve school districts across the country – including Houston, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Newark.

The mission of Project GRAD is to ensure a quality public education for all children in economically disadvantaged communities by partnering with local school districts. By providing additional funds, learning and teaching tools and support to those in most need, Project GRAD is able to increase the number of students who graduate from high school and increase the number of those students who attend and graduate from college.
