For the 18th consecutive year, Project GRAD Houston awarded college scholarships to seniors from the Houston Independent School District (HISD). Over 650 students from the 2009 graduating classes of Davis, Reagan, Wheatley, and Yates High Schools, and the Sam Houston Math, Science & Technology Center qualified for the non-competitive $4,000 scholarship which students may use at any degree-granting accredited college or university in the country. Scholarship recipients were recognized at a Scholarship Award Ceremony on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at Cullen Performance Hall on the University of Houston campus.
The program theme, “From Diplomas to Degrees,” captured the intent of the Project GRAD scholars to continue their educational journey beyond high school. Invited family members and school district officials observed as each recipient received a medallion to wear at their graduation – symbolizing the completion of the scholarship requirements. Guest speakers included scholarship recipients from each of the HISD/Project GRAD high schools, Mayor Bill White, Project GRAD co-founder James Ketelsen, and college-graduated GRAD scholars.
This year’s graduates join over 4,000 others who have been awarded the scholarship since the program’s inception in 1992, an investment by Project GRAD Houston and its community partners of more than $16 million.
The mission of Project GRAD is to ensure a quality public education for all students in economically disadvantaged communities so that high school and college graduation rates increase.
