Two Young Girls Among Luggage is from the series Displaced Persons, which is Kalischer’s most self-referential and personal work. Three years after the end of World War II, thousand of people were stranded in European displaced person Camps. Many of them were Jews who sought and found asylum in the U.S. where they hoped to make a new start. Acting on a strongly personal and biographical impulse, Kalischer photographed the arrival of Holocaust survivors in New York harbor between1947-1948.
A freelance photographer, Kalischer was born in Bavaria, Germany. In 1933, he left Berlin for Paris with his parents and studied there until World War II. After escaping from a forced-labor camp in France, he came to the U.S. in 1942. He studied at Cooper Union and the New School in New York City. He participated in the FOTOFEST2002 –Classicism and Beyond Biennial.
The mission of Project GRAD is to ensure a quality public education for all students in economically disadvantaged communities so that high school and college graduation rates increase.
