Li Lang worked on two series with the Yi ethnic minority in China - The Yi People and The Portrait of Yi. The Yi people are one of 55 minority groups in China and considered to be of a lower class. The Yi worship the spirits of ancestors, hills, trees, rocks, water, earth, and sky. The Yi People series documents the Yi people in their rural surroundings. The Portrait of Yi show the Yi standing in front of studio back drops wearing modern clothing. Li Lang is very taken by the Yi people and want to show their dignity.
