Classroom Time: Two 60 – minute sessions
Purpose:Â Explore area, perimeter, lateral area, total surface area, and volume using metric and customary units as well as visualize shapes that are implied within given shapes.
Skills Addressed:
Math skill: Unit measures in customary and metric, length, width, perimeter, area, surface area, volume, and prism
Visual Arts Skill: Negative space, Minimalism, and connecting art to other disciplines
Supplies:
Metric and customary ruler, pencil, centimeter grid paper, handouts, blank paper or cardstock, markers and/or map pencils, Ziploc bags of 24 unifix cubes (1 bag per student), and 6 – 10 cylindrical containers with lids, (e.g. Pringle’s cans, lemonade powder container, etc.- Note: cover any volume or weight measurements on the cans)
